Herbert W Armstong - Keeping the Law & Salvation

The Worldwide Church of God founded by Armstrong, as well as the offshoot churches which followed such as Restored Church of God; Philadelphian Church of God, and United Church of God, teach that the ten commandments must be obeyed in order to be saved.

This doctrine was first published by Herbert W Armstrong in 1934 - the year of the founding of his Radio/Worldwide church of God.

The worldwide churches claim to be the one true church because they keep the sabbath (as well as holydays). The allegation they ‘keep’ the Ten Commandments is itself used to further bolster their claims to being the one true church.

There is a related Post I wish to place here - see just below. There is a teaching that when one reads ’’ keep the commandments of Jesus’’, or words of similar construct, this must be read as being synonymous to ‘keeping’ the ten commandments. I examine this matter in the following link to Quora.

Is keeping the ‘commandments’ of Jesus given in the New Testament to be read as meaning (allegedly) keeping ‘the ten commandments’, that are set out in Exodus chapter 20?


Hello. My name is Bill. I live in Canberra, Australia. I retired from work some 5 years ago, I believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour by whom we are justified and sanctified by the miraculous workings of God. I don't attend a particular church but may go from time to time. I like to study the scriptures and I read quite widely generally. I had an experience over four decades ago with a church founded by Armstrong which claimed to be the one true church of this time. My wife (who passed away five years ago) and I left it a long time ago and one is grateful such bonds were broken.
